    Après avoir vécu les premières années de leur mariage à Bordeaux, puis Talence (où naît leur fille Colette en octobre 1922), les Devidas s’installent à Libourne en 1924 où Blanche exploite un commerce d’épicerie.     « [...] Monsieur Roger DEVIDAS, préparateur en pharmacie, et Madame Blanche BRIAT, épicière, époux, demeurant ensemble à Libourne, avenue Georges-Clemenceau, numéro quarante-six, ont vendu à Monsieur Jean DUHAU, cultivateur, et Madame Jeanne MOIGNET, sans profession, époux, demeurant ensemble à Labrille, commune de Vignonet, le petit Fonds de Commerce d’Épicerie, Mercerie et VIns à emporter qu’ils exploitaient à Libourne, avenue Georges-Clemenceau, numéro quarante-six, comprenant l’enseigne d’Épicerie Saint-Ferdinand sous laquelle le dit fonds est connu et exploité. [...] »
       Fin 1925, la famille s’installe à Cubjac (Dordogne) où naîtra leur second enfant, Claude, en octobre 1926. Roger Devidas travaille alors comme préparateur à la pharmacie de M. Léonce Durand.
     En 1928, nouveau déménagement pour Brantôme (Dordogne) et nouveau lieu de travail : la pharmacie Peyrot située rue Gambetta. Ils y resteront six ans. Jean Briat, le père de Blanche, viendra passer ses dernières années à Brantôme, en compagnie de son épouse Marie Peyronnet ; il décède en 1931. C’est à Brantôme que naît le dernier enfant de la famille, Jacques, en novembre 1929.
     En 1934, pour se rapprocher de son frère Louis lequel est directeur de la Société d’électricité rurale de la Benauge, Roger Devidas obtient un poste à la pharmacie centrale de l’asile de Cadillac-sur-Garonne, alors dirigé par Albert Mamelet (sa fille Marie-Rose fera une brillante carrière de haut-fonctionnaire, et sera à l’initiative d’une refonte de la psychiatrie hospitalière française des années 1960-1970). À la fin 1936, survient un accident malheureux. La chute d’une tuile lors d’un orage interrompra brutalement la vie familiale à Cadillac, Roger est hospitalisé d’urgence et ne peut momentanément plus travailler.
     En février 1937, la famille s’installe à nouveau à Bordeaux au 21 rue Duffour-Dubergier où Roger a retrouvé du travail et aide Pierre Petiot (diplômé en 1908) à la création d’une nouvelle pharmacie.
     En septembre 1938, le pharmacien de Hautefort (Dordogne) Louis Galtier (ingénieur chimiste de 1re classe) est à la recherche d’un préparateur de confiance pour l’aider à gérer l’officine. L’offre convient aux Devidas qui s’installent à Hautefort. Ils y resteront jusqu’en 1953.
     Au cours des années suivantes, Roger reprend une charge d’assureur à Périgueux auprès de la compagnie « La France ». Il décède à Périgueux en 1964. Son épouse, Blanche, tiendra ensuite un commerce de tabac-journaux à Saint-Pierre-de-Chignac jusqu’en 1972.

    Roger Devidas a été secrétaire général du groupe régional Sud-Ouest de l’association des « Combattants de moins de vingt ans » (Source : Bulletin de l’association Les Combattants de moins de vingt ans, 1re année, n° 2, quatrième trimestre 1937). La première réunion de cette section se tient le 22 octobre 1937 à l’Athénée à Bordeaux. Un court article de la Liberté du Sud-Ouest du 1er novembre 1937 relate cette réunion :
    « Les Anciens Combattants de moins de Vingt ans — L’assemblée statutaire s’est tenue le 22 courant à l’Athénée. La plupart de membres de l’association de « moins de 20 ans » étaient présents. Le rapport moral fut présenté par Devidas, sécrétaire général, et approuvé à l’unanimité. Il en fut de même pour le rapport financier présenté par Guyard, trésorier. Après une allocution du Dr Girou, plusieurs membres posèrent un certain nombre de questions et firent part de leurs désidérata. De nouveaux membres ont été admis ; dix-sept sont venus immédiatement grossir notre effectif qui devient de jour en jour plus important. Pour ceux qui sont encore hésitants, nous définissons ici nos buts : union, camaraderie, entr’aide, sans distinction de parti ou de croyance. Notre groupement réunira bientôt la majeure partie des Anciens combattants de moins de 20 ans. Prochaine réunion amicale, vendredi 5 novembre [1937], à 21 heures, Café Gambetta, 20, place Gambetta.     En 1951, Roger Devidas est nommé suppléant du juge de paix du canton de Hautefort en remplacement de Louis Galtier qui a été atteint par la limite d’âge. (Source : Journal officiel du 4 août 1951).

     La petite ville de Bir Jdid a été connue comme Saint Hubert quand le Maroc était sous le protectorat de la France, elle est située de 45 kilomètres de sud de Casablanca, et à 50 kilomètres au nord d’EL Jadida. Son climat est modéré et humide grâce à sa situation près de la côte atlantique à environ quatorze kilomètres. Elle a été fondée pour être une place d’assemblée des chasseurs.
     Bir Jdid s’est appelé ainsi parce que Bir (puits) et Jdid (nouveau) est la combinaison des mots (nouveau puits), au moment où Mharza (un des indigènes originaux de Bir Jdid) a creusé un nouveau puits où les gens pourraient arroser en bas de leurs bêtes et remplir au jet leurs récipients.
     La plupart des activités communes des indigènes sont l’agriculture et commerce.

     Bir Jdid était au départ une halte de diligence entre Casablanca et Mazagan (actuellement El Jadida). La Halte Saint Hubert, aujourd hui disparue, était un restaurant tenu par une famille française avec une station d’essence Mobil. Outre la cuisine très appréciée à l’époque, c’était aussi un point de vente des tickets de la CTM en direction de Casablanca, Azemmour et El jadida. Un deuxième restaurant était tenu par Mme Orsa au côté opposé près de la maison cantonnière.
     Sur la route menant a Sidi Said Benmaachou se trouvait un boucher et en face de lui était la boulangerie de M. Recoin sur la route menant à El Oulja. Bir Jdid Chavent était un point de ralliement des chasseurs mais aussi un point de ravitaillement en eau potable pour les populations autochtones.
     Les familles marocaines aisées de l’époque se réduisaient à quelques unités (les deux Ben Brahim haj et Ahmed, le cheikh Réguet et le Mokademm Benarafa à El Oulja). Les autres familles étaient des artisans (maçons : Boutayeb et Mounir), des petits commerçants (Taibi), un meunier (Azzar), des fellahs (El Haddad).
     En 1952, nous étions 11 élèves dont une seule fille (Zahra) inscrits à l’école rurale de Bir Jdid qui comptait trois instituteurs (le couple Devidas et un enseignant de langue arabe, Aguida puis Makroum). L’école française était située dans le collège actuel et ne communiquait pas avec l’autre institution. La géographie mais aussi les habitudes ont beaucoup évolué avec l’avènement de l’indépendance du pays.

    Le 10 novembre 1993, un violent carambolage dans lequel étaient impliqués plusieurs camions bouleversait et interrogeait la France. Le débat sur les moyens de transport était ouvert. Un an après, le gouvernement continue à privilégier la route.

     Une cérémonie commémorative a été organisée, jeudi, à Mirambeau (Charente-Maritime), un an après le carambolage de l’A10, entre Paris et Bordeaux, qui a fait, le 10 novembre 1993, 15 morts et 55 blessés. Une messe, qui a réuni quelque 200 personnes, parmi lesquelles des rescapés, les familles de victimes, ainsi que sauveteurs et gendarmes, a été célébrée à 11 heures en l’église de Saint-Martial-de-Mirambeau, village où avaient été rassemblés les corps après l’accident.
     Les rescapés et familles de victimes se sont ensuite rendus sur les lieux du drame. Une plaque commémorative portant l’inscription «Aux victimes de l’accident du 10 novembre 1993» a été déposée, ainsi que plusieurs gerbes de fleurs, dont une du ministre des Transports et une autre du préfet de la Charente-Maritime. Après la cérémonie, Me Jacques Vincens, l’avocat de l’Association de défense et de soutien aux victimes et familles de victimes de l’accident de l’A10 (ADVIFA), a annoncé qu’une cellule constituée de 6 à 7 psychologues allait être mise en place au sein de l’ADVIFA afin de venir en aide aux «personnes qui souffrent encore dans leur chair et dans leur tête». Il a également déclaré qu’il allait proposer l’intégration d’une telle cellule dans le plan ORSEC, déclenché en cas de catastrophe ou d’urgence collective.
     «Un halo rougeâtre, comme une cloche de lumière. Un enchevêtrement de voitures carbonisées. Et puis l’odeur... insoutenable.» Un an après, rescapés et secouristes sont toujours sous le choc et ont en mémoire cette vision de cauchemar. Ce jour-là, à 19 h 30, la circulation est dense. Il pleut. A la hauteur de Mirambeau, la fumée qui s’échappe d’un camion stationné sur la bande d’arrêt d’urgence provoque un accident en chaîne, mêlant 46 véhicules légers et 6 ensembles routiers. Le feu gagne la plupart des voitures. Un gigantesque brasier s’étend sur 150 mètres d’autoroute. Les sauveteurs auront les pires difficultés à extraire les victimes des tôles froissées et calcinées. Au point que le bilan de la tragédie ne pourra définitivement être établi que le surlendemain. L’identification des victimes prendra plusieurs jours. Le 13 novembre, deux conducteurs de camion sont mis en examen pour homicides involontaires: Raymond Ramirez, dont la remorque s’est mise en travers de la chaussée lorsqu’il a dû freiner, et Mariusz Pawlowsky, un chauffeur polonais qui conduisait le dernier poids lourd, celui qui a percuté par l’arrière une file de voitures déjà immobilisées ou accidentées.
     Un an après, le dossier est au point mort. L’instruction, qui a été confiée à Dominique Guiraud, juge d’instruction à Saintes, est suspendue à la remise du rapport des experts dont les conclusions étaient attendues au printemps, puis repoussées pour être transmises, peut-être, au début de 1995. Ces experts doivent décrire ce qui s’est passé, l’ordre des chocs, leur force et surtout la cause de l’incendie qui constitue la particularité de cet accident. Leur travail consiste notamment à désosser chacun des véhicules pour établir la résistance mécanique et l’énergie cinétique afin de déduire la vitesse. Quelques heures après l’accident, le ministre des Transports avait, en effet, hâtivement bouclé l’enquête.
     Selon lui, la cause du carambolage était la vitesse. Un peu comme si les automobilistes avaient volontairement choisi de mourir à Mirambeau. «Il y a un problème national qui est en chacun de nous. Nous nous transformons en prenant le volant. Cela peut conduire à une catastrophe de ce genre», avait-il dit. Mais l’émotion dans le pays avait permis d’ouvrir en grand le dossier des transports et de leur sécurité dans notre pays. La question, ni technique ni utopique, appelait, en effet, une réponse politique: celle d’un choix de civilisation. Un an après, le ministre a apporté la sienne. Celle qui consiste à continuer à privilégier la route au détriment des autres moyens de transports, en décidant de lancer un programme autoroutier sur 3.000 nouveaux kilomètres, et en engageant la SNCF à supprimer des liaisons, des gares, ou des ateliers de maintenance, comme à Vitry, dans le Val-de-Marne.
     Et, un an après, le ministre en est encore au stade des effets d’annonce. Il prépare, a-t-il précisé, des mesures destinées, selon lui, à éviter de tels accidents. Un projet de loi viserait à transformer de contraventions en délits les excès dépassant de plus de 50 km/h les vitesses autorisées, et le débridage des limiteurs de vitesse ou des chronotachygraphes installés à bord des camions. Par ailleurs, sur certains itinéraires autoroutiers les plus chargés, la circulation des poids lourds, déjà interdite le week-end, le sera aussi les jours de forte circulation. Mais des dérogations seront toujours possibles. En outre, à partir du 1er mai 1995, les poids lourds devront avoir des réservoirs de carburant renforcés, offrant une meilleure résistance aux chocs.
     Un an après, les rescapés et les familles des victimes ont cependant l’impression d’avoir été oubliés. Yann Méheux, le président de l’ADVIFA a annoncé son intention d’engager une action en référé en vue d’obtenir des indemnisations à titre provisoire pour les victimes. Celles-ci se heurtent toujours aux compagnies d’assurances et certaines se sont même vu pénaliser d’un malus.
