TERWILLIGER — Died at Rochester, Minn.,
Simeon R. Terwilliger, formerly of this city, aged 87 years. He is survived by his widow and one sister, Mrs. Catherine Humphreys, of 408 State street, this city. Funeral services were held in Rochester on Jan 21st and the remains taken to Pine Island, Minn. for interment. The above notice will be received with regret by our entire community, as Mr. and Mrs. Terwilliger and their daughter, the late Mrs. Swarthout, resided here for the past 14 years, removing to the south in the winter of 1915-16, where Mrs. Swarthout died. Last summer Mr. and Mrs. Terwilliger returned to the old home in Oronoco, Minn. And in October again moved to Rochester for the winter months. On Jan 14 he was stricken with paralysis and died on Thursday evening following.
The deceased was a self made man. He was born in the old VanRensselaer Manor, Albany county, N.Y. in 1830. The family removed to Cayuga county and later to Oronoco, Minn., where he started business with $100 cash in hand. Every investment was a success and he acquired a large amount of land, having four large farms in the vicinity of Oronoco, Olmstead, and he was sucessful in managing the same and became a man of capital. As a member of the Republican party he was a great factor in his neighborhood and his ability and good judgement soon made him a leader. When in later life he retired from active business duties and politics he leased his farms to good advantage. He removed to Fulton and spent his winters at Miami, Fla., the spring and fall in Fulton and his summers at Oronoco. The death of his only child last year was a terrible blow to Mr. and Mrs. Terwilliger and they sold their handsome residence on South Fourth street and returned to Minnesota.
Mr. Terwilliger was one of the most sociable of gentlemen of the old school; he was well posted on current events, and was a thorough going Republican of the Lincoln type. He made a host of friends while a residence of this city, who tender their unstinted sympathy to his widow in her bereavement.
