Julia Bohmbach (née Marchant)
May 22, 1915 – March 30, 2021
Julia passed away peacefully at the Lions Manor Personal Care home in Winnipeg on March 30, 2021. She was 105 years of age. Julia was predeceased by her husband Pete Bohmbach and siblings Herbert, Harris, Joseph, Frederick, James, Caroline, Madeline. She is survived by sister Deloise McDougal and many nieces and nephews. Julia resided at the Lions Place until she reached the age of 100 and then moved to Lions Manor Personal Care Home until her passing.
Julia was an exceptional woman born to Florence and Brazillia Marchant in Winnipeg. She was one of nine children. Julia received her nurses training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Winnipeg in 1934. By 1942 she travelled around the world twice and spent two years nursing in Dharmsata, India. She served as a civilian nurse in London through the Blitz and then returned to India to nurse for another two years.
Returning to North America she settled in Rochester, Minnesota to work in St. Mary’s Hospital. In 1955 Julia became the Director of nursing at Olmsted Medical Centre then known as Olmsted Community Hospital
In 1955 she married Pete Bohmbach and unfortunately he was diagnosed with Alzheimer disease in 1972. She retired from nursing at the Olmsted Hospital in 1977 to care for her husband.
Julia formed the first support group for Alzheimer and sat on the Board of Directors of that society until she returned to Canada in October 2010. Julia taught classes for caregivers of Alzheimer patients and lectures of Alzheimer many different groups and was a popular speaker at many events in Minnesota.
In 1999 she was awarded The Olmsted County and Minnesota Outstanding Senior Citizen award recognizing her work with the Alzheimer Society. An annual Educational Scholarship is given in Julia’s name by the OMC Auxiliary. Julia was always involved with her community. She was instrumental in forming the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band which was very popular and had 1000 performances in SE Minnesota. Along with this she formed a square dancing club which she enjoyed for 20 years.
Having many interests Julia was an accomplished painter, Piano player, as well as a photographer. TEA-Kwon Do was her form of exercise. During her time at Lions Place she held Sing- a-Longs for her fellow residents.
A private family interment of Ashes will be held at Chapel Lawn Cemetery on April 23, 2021.

East Kildonan, was the scene of a wedding Jan. 5, when Julia Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Marchant, became the bride of Dr. W. D. P. Griggs, of Llpton, Sask., son ol Mr. and Mrs. W. Griggs, Grlswold, Man. Rev. H. Sherstone read the marriage lines. The bride entered the church with her father to the strains of the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin. Miss Madeleine Marchant, sister of the bride, and Miss Margaret Ross were the attendants. Mr. Earl Griggs, of Saskatchewan, was his brother’s best man. The ushers were Messrs. Fred Marchant and George Fraser: Ivory velvet fashioned the bride’s princess gown, which fell to a train from the box - pleated back panel. Her net veil, edged with bridal lace, was held tn place with a wreath of orange blossoms. The bridesmaids wore net over taffeta In mauve and green tones. They carried Talisman roses. A reception was held at the home of the bride’s parents, 327 Leighton ave.
